Ellen Von Unwerth.

I love Ellen Von Unwerth’s photos. There’s something very liberating about these uncompromising pictures of uncompromising women in compromising situations. It’s also refreshing to see a bit of sauce with some depth and a sense of fun rather than just everything on display for the boys. Unwerth was a model for 10 years and cites Helmut Newton and Jaques Henri Lartigue as influences, “one for the strength, sexuality and humour and the other one for the lightness and charm.”

Her Fräulein series of pictures, which you may have caught at the Michael Hoppen Gallery in November, has now been released as a 500-page retrospective by Taschen. One for the Christmas list (although maybe don’t open it in front of your Nan).
