Jimmy Edgar - XXX

It's with a wagon heavily loaded with 80s synths and drum pads that Jimmy Edgar rolls into town trumpeting the arrival of new album ‘XXX’. From the already digitally released 'Hot Raw Sex,' the musical equivalent of a vocoded post one night stand brag, to the Missy Elliot-esque ‘Push’ and Chromeo loving ‘Turn You Inside Out’, the album keeps its easy simplicity all the way through by not straying too far from previously proven, perfectly compatible combinations of sounds. Funky is a word I really hate to use but this release is that with a capital F. Everyone from hipsters to true fans to the spectacle that is the drunken City boy could get down to this collection of provocatively written tracks should they so wish. There’s even something there for the musos too, particularly in the detail. Admittedly, there’s the odd moment where the influence of Harold Faltermeyer and echoes of synth patterns past threaten to overly date the music but overall the record achieves the right balance of vintage and brand new. Besides, even if you hate every single narcissistic, sexually charged note of it you’ll still find it impossible to stand still when it’s on. The album is released tomorrow on !K7.
