Electronic soundsmith Kwes has been doing this for years. Ever since he was given a tape recorder with a built in microphone aged 10, life has been all about sourcing, collecting, recording and producing sounds. Now advanced from hand held cassettes, Kwes makes a mix of music - broken electronic beats enhanced with synths, both warming and gnarly, low key organic drum beats and a vast array of sounds and instruments, distorted and pure. Kwes has one single out there - ‘Hearts In Home/Tissues’ – and has produced ‘reworkings’ of artists like Magistrates, Wild Beasts and Beck.
‘Heart In Home’ is a gently sinister track built around a soft vocal, a distorted double bass/didgeridoo type sound and a sweetly unnerving bell with an unexpected rainstorm in the middle introducing a low key drum beat. ‘Tissues’ is sweet and lazy, a distorted bass giving it a pleasing edginess and again morphing half way through, this time into a kind of Eastern instrumental chanting.

Although he’s making a name for himself as a remixer, Kwes obviously has a lot more to offer. The music he makes is compelling, unpredictable and a breath of fresh air. His website’s pretty cool too: www.kwes.info.
