So the Couture Spring-Summer 2010 shows are under way in Paris this week and with most of the big names having already hit the catwalk or about to do so (Jean Paul Gaultier and Valentino still to come this afternoon), there’s been much to drool over. Pastels made a splash with Karl Lagerfeld at Chanel where the signature tweed suit got an ice cream parlour makeover and ruffles, frills and sheer fabrics were combined with metallics, flowing satin, overstated hair and tres feminine hair bows. Givenchy mixed up the pastel trend with adult splashes of black, flesh-flashing lace and sheers, unfussy, structured ruffles and faces made up for a night out in a Goth club. In a complete break from all the luxurious pastel femininity, John Galliano at Christian Dior presented a show with a strong equestrian theme with riding jackets, skirts and hats featuring heavily against My Fair Lady style ‘day at the races’ outfits and fabulous 1940s-glamour-meets-geisha-girl-evening-dresses.
