Working from a chocolate, cream, blush and...er neon...palette of sheer fabrics, textures, stiffened ruffles and tiers, the Valentino show retained all of its traditional shapely romanticism with a twist provided by some seriously dayglo splashes. Most of the designs were relentlessly clashy and seemed so desperate for youthful approval that the collection felt slightly at odds with itself. Jean Paul Gaultier on the other hand remained 100% Gaultier and resolutely outlandish, plumping for a South American theme with giant sombreros and tailored, embellished jackets and skirts appearing alongside dresses inspired by palm trees, Mayan princesses and Aztec warriors, all adorned with heavy metal jewellery and the usual saucy sense of fun.
