So, how to describe the new Editor's album? Different. Not different as in differing from 2009 musical trends but certainly different to the Editors as we knew them. For Editors have gone electro. Previously, Editors albums were riddled with guitar-driven, emotional anthems with driving drums and plenty of crescendos and whilst the new album takes its cue from this kind of structure, this time it relies heavily on synths and electronic drum beats for the heart-thumping effects. Vocally Tom Smith presents a much stronger, more theatrical voice this time around, taking cues left right and centre from Brandon Flowers and perhaps Pete Burns' (pre-collagen) 'You Spin Me Round'. In terms of the tracks, Like Treasure will make you think of Coldplay but with the redeemingly sinister lyrics 'you'll keep forever, I'll bury you like treasure.' Papillon's opening is reminiscent of La Roux with its dimmed drum pads and In This Light and On This Evening, the album's opener has a wonderful sense of occasion and an entirely satisfactory crescendo. This album is not really anything that hasn't been done before and in one or two places sounds a bit like old Editors tracks tacked together with electro vibes for a 2009 update but it's an interesting development from the Birmingham band and overall they carry this progression off with aplomb.
