Work of Sam Haskins

Although the name Sam Haskins may not immediately set bells ringing, you'll probably recognise at least one of his photos, as the renowned photographer was the influence (forty odd years ago) behind the camera for the cover shot for the Last of the Shadow Puppets album, The Age of Understatement. However, this is just the tip of the iceberg with his work as Haskins has a rich and impressive history of imaginatively photographing mainly women, mostly nude. The Last of the Shadow Puppets shot came from Haskins earliest work, Five Girls, published in 1962 which took a whole new approach to shooting the naked female form. This was followed by Cowboy Kate in 1964, an exploration of black and white photography as a medium of communication and expression and these, along with the two later works November Girl and African Image, set Haskins apart as something of a concept visionary. This pioneering spirit was compounded by the in-camera image montage Haskins developed (pre-Photoshop), perhaps the most famous of which is The Apple Face. The South African born snapper's latest publication is Fashion Etcetera (2009) - the book is sponsored by Tommy Hilfiger and was inspired by Haskin's first retrospective show at the National Portrait Gallery in Canberra Australia in 2006.
