Young Empires for Dazed & Confused

“We make music that makes you feel wealthy, attractive, and powerful; traits the human race has coveted since the dawn of time,” says Jake Palahnuk, the “Rhythm” section of Canadian twentysomethings, Young Empires. Matthew Vlahovich (“Hooks”) and Robert Aaron Ellingson (“Swagger”) complete the lineup, a Cut Copy/Friendly Fires/ Tanlines type outfit, making genre defiant tracks that sprawl over chillwave, pop, tropical and disco punk. They even have the audacity to feature flutes, a feat not so brazenly attempted since they heyday of Jethro Tull only successfully achieved by Yeasayer.

The band are also brand-minded, taking control of their own images, moving and still. The track “Glory of The Night” is accompanied by one of their videos, a 3-minute tale of marionette murder and destruction. According to Jake, “the song is about a metaphysical bond that exists only in dreams - the puppets represent this type of abstraction from reality. The video was made to capture the duality of the song, to visualize the two distinct yet cohesive sides of dreams and waking life. “ Okay, then.

Currently unsigned but generating plenty of interest, the Toronto band hint at a single for autumn and a possible album for 2011, “brimming with swagger, sexuality and maybe even a little angst at times.“ They certainly have no shortage of drive and Jake insists they’re in it for the long haul: “Young Empires is the most serious project we've ever taken on- it's the culmination of each of our past experiences, current desires and ever-developing philosophies. We have entered into a wonderful challenge - to compose and produce the new music for our generation.”
