I'm in two minds about the path of destruction being wreaked across London in the name of Crossrail. On the one hand they're demolishing my office which means I may yet manage to avoid being electrocuted by the leaking roof dripping onto the computers or plummeting to a violent death when the unmaintainted lift cable suddenly snaps. On the other hand some venerable London institutions have gone to make way for what will inevitably just end up as another overpriced, stuffy, overcrowded pain in the arse. Sadly, now it's the turn of The Arts Gallery, exhibition space for the hothouse of talents from The London College of Fashion and Central Saint Martins, to face the wrecking ball.
The Arts Gallery is part of the University of the Arts London, which comprises six internationally renowned colleges specialising in art, design, fashion, communication and the performing arts including The London College of Fashion and Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design. The gallery has been up and running for the past three years and has showcased some interesting talents including a retrospective by Tom Hunter and a talk by Mami Kataoka's exploring trends in Japanese contemporary art. The current and final exhibition is The All of Everything; Art will eat itself by Mike Ballard, "an all- encompassing installation covering floors, walls and ceilings featuring the artist’s flamboyant vision of art history... [which] races back and projects forward through art history, fusing, referencing and sampling at blistering speed." You have until the end of Feb before the bulldozers move in.
