Having expressed some doubt about the new Yeasayer material I heard at the Bat for Lashes gig back at the beginning of October, rather embarrassingly I'm now having to back track. This is because the first release from this new material, 'Ambling Alp', has actually been knocking around for ages - I first heard it back at a gig last year at ULU and I loved its wobbly positivity even then.
Yeasayer have a habit of writing wise-about-life, soul affirming lyrics and Ambling Alp with its chorus of 'stick up for yourself son, never mind what anybody else done' is another of these heartwarmers. The track has the usual mix of Yeasayer electro-hippy madness with a whole range of samples and noises being put to innovative new uses and lifting the song above the swamp of repetition and mundaneness that indie bands often sink into. For the moment I'm withholding my judgment on the newer, braver stuff but Ambling Alp is a track that has been made in the Yeasayer mould and its easy to love.
