The Big Pink - A Brief History of Love

Is it just me or do the Big Pink sound really like the Stone Roses? You don't have to listen that hard to hear an unmistakeable nasal twang to the vocals on their debut album that's more than a little reminiscent of Ian Brown. A Brief History of Love was released this week (14th September) and is a heavy but gratifying mix of raw guitars, the odd streak of electro magic and that lazy, nasal vocal. The album contains three of the four previously released singles (Velvet, Dominos - my favourite - and Too Young to Love) which will be familiar to Big Pink fans having been released over the period since October 2008. Opener Crystal Visions has the iconic sounding guitar of an anthem followed by a Yeasayer-type build before breaking later into some serious noise, the climax applied to many of the tracks on this album. Golden Pendulum veers off to the electro side of things, Frisk takes advantage of a more traditional band sound shot through with electronic samples and Count Backwards From Ten is as close as you get to a ballad with these guys. The band have just announced they've got the gig of supporting Muse on the UK leg of their forthcoming tour but to be honest I'd probably by the ticket just to see them.
